"The most useful and stimulating College of Education meeting I have attended…"

Those were the words of a senior faculty member of the San Diego State University College of Education following a Visioning Workshop conducted by America's Schoolhouse Council. Judy Hoskens of Cuningham Group Architecture and Dominick Demonica of Legat Architects facilitated two days of exercises and activities that helped the College prepare for the design of a new College of Education facility.

The workshop focused on defining the vision of the College and establishing function statements for the facility, rather than on building design. Addressing workshop attendees, University President Stephen L. Weber challenged everyone to go beyond the "sum of the parts" that has characterized past building

projects on the campus and to not "mindlessly recreate the past just because that is what we know."

College of Education Dean, Lionel (Skip) Meno, said the week after the workshop: "You were a big hit. ... [The faculty] were very impressed with the way you worked together and with them. They came away believing that you really cared about the College of Education and them. They also felt good about what they produced and have been busy sharing it with their colleagues."

Also participating in the workshop for America's Schoolhouse were Susan Einspahr of Kingscott Architects, David Kuckuk, of The Thomas Group, and America's Schoolhouse Council Executive Director, Jim Brady.
